I have been a member of SMPS for 11 years and I still learned quite a few new things at this month’s Coordinator’s Club. Julio Santos, Component Relations Manager at SMPS Headquarters, spoke to the group about the benefits of SMPS Membership. Julio supports members, chapters, and regional conferences, and is also great resource for anything involving MySMPS or StarChapter.
The Statistics
Julio briefly went over the mission and vison of SMPS and gave a few current statistics about the organization.
SMPS MISSION: To advocate for, educate, and connect leaders in the building industry.
VISION: Business transformed through marketing leadership.
- Founded in 1973 in St. Louis, SMPS currently has 7,151 members – the highest number to date,
- There are currently 58 SMPS Chapters across the country and in Canada,
- The current industry make-up of SMPS is:
- 25% Engineering
- 14% Architecture

Membership Value
There is a plethora of benefits to joining SMPS – some that may be quite obvious and others that are less so. Below are a few key take-aways that I learned about the benefits of being a member of SMPS.
- Learning Labs – Learning Labs are monthly educational webinars, free to members. All Learning Labs are archived in the Marketing Resource Center, so you don’t need to necessarily be present to watch them. Also, if you recently became a member, you get access to all previously held Learning Labs, in addition to those in the future.
- MySMPS Communities – When you are signed-in to mysmps.org, you will have access to Communities, including the Research Triangle Community. These communities allow you to pose questions, post your own tips or advice, and engage in discussion with other SMPS Members beyond your own Chapter. For example, let’s say you would like to join a community that is focused on Adobe. You would simply type “Adobe” into the search bar and mysmps.org will populate related communities for you.
- Salary Survey – SMPS provides annual salary updates and comparison reports to SMPS Members. This benefit is free to members as long as you answer the required questions and complete at least 40% of the survey. Members who have not participated, can also purchase the survey for $99. Audience members said this salary survey has come in handy for them on a few occasions. It is definitely a benefit worth checking out! Check out the results from the 2018 Survey.
- Career Center – The SMPS Career Center provides job postings from across the country as well as the opportunity to submit your resume for a free review. As a member, you also have access to Job Descriptions, which can be found on mysmps.org in the Marketing Resources Center under the “Career Resources” folder.
- SMPS Foundation White Papers - The SMPS Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization established by SMPS to promote research and education that advances the body of knowledge in the field of professional services marketing. The Foundation provides detailed research papers on marketing-related topics, also free to members. I especially found this one interesting.
- Referral Program – Did you know that through the Share SMPS: Refer a Friend program, if you refer a colleague who joins the Society as a new member, you’ll earn three additional months of membership (valued at over $97)! Refer two new members who join in the same year and receive a $25 e-gift card on top of it. The recently implemented – Strive for Five – will get you a $100 e-gift card if you refer five members in a year. I’d say it’s time to put your recruiting hat on!
A big thank you to Julio and SMPS HQ for making this program to happen. If you have questions about membership, mysmps.org, or any other member-related inquires, feel free to reach out to our Chapter Membership Directors at [email protected] or connect directly with Julio.
