February Program Recap: Creativity Made Accessible To All

During this still very unstable, but busy time, creativity can sometimes be the biggest trait that comes up lacking in our work. Whether it’s demanding deadlines, a slew of boring forms to fill in, or just sheer exhaustion, creativity can feel like an impossible feat. So, what do you do when creativity is stifled and you’re in a rut? Well, John McNeal, executive coach and owner of 2reveal, helped us discover just that in February’s engaging program Creativity Made Accessible to All.

John helped provide big, yet manageable ways to spark change within ourselves and our work. He encouraged us to use affirmations with ourselves, pointing out that words matter (especially words we speak to ourselves!). Did you know, when a group of employees was studied to determine why one was creative and the other was not, it simply came down to the fact that the creative group believed they were creative. Pretty simple, right? It’s a mindset! As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” Reinforce the desires you have and the qualities you want to possess.
He also encouraged us to make new connections, and to “think big.” Creativity is taking something that’s already there and combining it with something else to come up with something new. A wall was made from combining bricks and mortar. Houses were made by combining walls and a roof. All of these big ideas can be attained just by asking, what if we combine this with that? Pretty remarkable, yet so simple.
Perhaps my favorite point that John made was that our greatest opportunity for growth and inspiration is to go outside our industry. This gives us freedom to think and break outside the box and generate the big ideas. Ask the question: if this works, what would we gain? Don’t let the impossible stop you! You can always cull down your ideas, but there’s no harm in starting BIG.
Overall, I personally believe John brought up some great ideas for sparking creativity and breaking through stagnant periods in our jobs as marketing professionals. Are you willing to give some of these tips a try to bring on your next big idea and open the floodgates to creativity?
